Breastfeeding Calorie Deficit Calculator — Complete Guide

This tool estimates basal metabolic rate (BMR), total daily energy expenditure (TDEE), adds breastfeeding needs, and then calculates a recommended daily calorie intake for your selected weight-change goal. It includes step-by-step explanations and practical tips for safely managing weight while breastfeeding.

How the calculator estimates calories (formulas)

We use the Mifflin–St Jeor equation to estimate BMR:

BMR (women) = 10 × weight_kg + 6.25 × height_cm − 5 × age − 161

TDEE = BMR × activity_factor. Then add breastfeeding additional kcal (300–500 kcal/day) depending on exclusivity.

Example scenario

30 years, 165 cm, 70 kg, moderately active, exclusive breastfeeding (~500 kcal/day), goal: lose 0.5 kg/week. The calculator will show estimated BMR, TDEE, breastfeeding kcal, recommended daily calories and projected weekly weight change.

Safety and clinical considerations

Rapid weight loss can reduce milk supply. Aim for modest deficits and check infant growth and milk supply. Work with a lactation consultant or registered dietitian if needed.

Practical tips

  • Prioritize nutrient-dense foods and adequate protein.
  • Stay hydrated — fluid needs increase during breastfeeding.
  • Monitor infant weight gain and milk supply when changing diet.
